Direct messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, and so are private rooms and their files once encryption is on. Angaara uses Matrix's Olm and Megolm through the Rust crypto engine, built on the Double Ratchet, the same design Signal uses. Compare emojis or scan a QR code to prove there's nobody in the middle.
Got a file from someone you don't know? File Check takes it apart on your device without running it: fake file types, shortcuts and scripts, macros and remote templates, packed Windows programs, and ReversingLabs' open malware rules. Link Check follows every redirect in a sandbox and flags days-old sites and fake sign-in pages.
Your messages never pass through us. They go straight between the app and your Matrix homeserver. Turn on private mode and the app stops contacting Angaara's own server entirely. Everything we do store is listed, line by line, on our data page.
Angaara runs on Matrix, an open, decentralised network. Use a public homeserver, or run your own so your data lives on hardware you control. Teams on different servers can still talk to each other, and the app itself is open source, so you can audit it or host your own copy.

Your homeserver can see who's in a room, when messages are sent and by whom, and room names, topics and profiles. It can't read the messages.
Rooms anyone can join aren't encrypted, because anyone can read them anyway. Keep sensitive talk in DMs and private rooms.
Until you verify someone, you're trusting your homeserver to hand you their real keys. Verify the people who matter.
Encryption can't help if a device is already compromised. Keep devices updated and sign out of ones you don't use.
